Area Information
Washington County
Washington County boasts the most aggressive growth in the State and has been among the top three fastet growth areas in the nation for many years due to its temperate climate, wonderful people and beautiful location. The largest city in the County, St. George, is snow-free and typically sees over sunny 300 days each year.
St. George visitors can take a short drive from St. George to several of the most visited national parks including Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. In addition St. George offers great golfing, grand dining, and theater entertainment. Other activities include water recreation, biking, rock climbing or just walking along one of the many paved trails in the area.
Climate
St. George’s climate is an attraction to its residents and visitors alike. It is a green oasis in the desert, and the combination of the warm, dry winter climate and natural beauty of the setting draws both new residents and tourists to the area.
The area is a desert climate with characteristic mild winters and hot summers. The elevation of 2,760 feet, promotes year round recreation and leisure activities.
Economy
Washington County’s economic climate has been impacted by the current recession, along with the nation. Over the past several years the area has experienced some dramatic industrial growth, with service and trade as the employment opportunities in the area. Washington County School District is the largest employer in the county. Intermountain Health Care comes in next with Wal-Mart coming in third.
Education
St. George is the home of Dixie State College, which offers 4-year degree options to students. Currently, bachelor degrees are offered in 15+ different subjects. Dixie State began offering bachelor degrees in the year 2000 and continues to expand those programs every year. Dixie State College also continues to offer Associate Degrees, Certificate Programs and Adult Education classes. Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City, UT, just 50 miles north via I-15.
Medical Facilites
St. George is home to the largest/newest hospital in the region. Dixie Regional Medical Center River Road (DRMC) became an additional DRMC campus in November of 2003 and offers several state-of-the-art medical treatments. Together DRMC’s River Road and 400 East Campuses are licensed for 228 patient beds. Patients needing surgery, emergency attention, cardiology/heart services and much, much more find compassionate, skilled care here.
